As Ryan said here, "it's a little extreme to say this is the end of his campaign," and the new CBS/NYT poll shows how right that was. Conducted 10/19-10/24, it should reflect at least some of the supposed "shock waves" from his abortion comments. And it doesn't. The trend in this poll seems to be showing that Cain is consolidating the not-Romney support. The number of undecided voters has declined 8 points since September. Gingrich is still holding in there as the not-Romney spoiler.
The upcoming Gingrich-Cain mano a mano could be the big event that either consolidates the not-Romney under Cain or refractures it into a Gingrich-Perry-Cain split leaving Romney free to walk into the nomination with his steady, but unstellar, low-twenties support. Or, the upcoming foreign policy debate could do the trick and finally make the Tea Party believers in Romney (or at least unbelievers in Cain, et al.).
